The Minuteman Repeater Association and the Quannapowitt Radio Association have scheduled a joint hidden transmitter fox hunt on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 10:00 a.m.

- The fox will be a stationary ham radio operator in a  vehicle transmitting on 146.19 MHz PL 146.2.  This is the input frequency of the MMRA Weston repeater (146.79 PL  146.2).

- The fox will be located within 10 miles of the Weston  repeater which is at North 42deg 22.8' West 071deg 19.2.

- The signal from the fox must be strong enough so the fox  can be understood on the repeater output.

- The fox will transmit for at least 30 seconds of every  five minutes during the fox hunt.  The fox hunt begins at
10:00AM and ends when either there are no more hunters who  have not found the fox or noon.

- The fox must continue to transmit on the hunt frequency  throughout the hunt.  However, hunters are prohibited from
transmitting once they have located the fox.

- The fox must not be on private property.  In order to be  found the fox must not require driving on private roads.

- Cooperation among the hunters is encouraged.  Sharing  initial direction bearings and signal strength
observations is necessary to allow some localization (for  example the town where the fox in located) so that finding
the fox within the time limits is more likely.

- Home stations are also encouraged to participate and share  their readings.  As the hunt progresses, information
sharing is less valuable.

- Information is generally shared via the 2M repeater used  for the hunt (in this case 146.79 MHz PL 146.2).  Many
hunters use 70-cm to talk and to hear what others are  saying as their 2-Meter radio may be dedicated to RDF on
the repeater input frequency.

The MMRA 70cm HUB1 repeater in Marlboro will be linked to  during the hunt.  Hunters therefore may transmit on either
2-meters or on 70-cm to join in the conversation.  HUB1  repeater output is 449.925 PL 88.5 and the input is
444.925 PL 88.5.

As the hunters approach the fox conversations often shifts  to 446.0 MHz FM simplex.

- We plan to have lunch at a restaurant near the fox  location after the hunt.  Lunch location will be a
consensus decision of those hunters who have found the  fox.

- Ham radio operators who do not have equipment or who would  like to gain experience from riding with an experienced
fox hunter are invited to ride along.

It is expected that each hunter will start from separate  locations (as determined by the hunter).

A practice fox hunt turned into an actual radio direction finding event on Saturday, July 11, 2009 to combat interference that had silenced the Genesis Amateur Radio Society's repeater in Plymouth for three days. Genesis club members traced the interfering signal to the intersection of Routes 28 and 58 in Wareham, MA but could not make further progress. GARS member Kevin O'Donnell, K1KOD contacted Bruce Hayden, NI1X for assistance.

"I said the South Shore Fox Hunters were going to be on a fox hunt Saturday morning and that I would ask the participants to help find the interference after the hunt." Hayden added that "those participating that day were Whitman Amateur Radio Club members."

Bruce Hayden, NI1X, Jeremy Breef-Pilz, KB1REQ, Roy Logan, KB1CYV, Jeff Lehmann N1ZZN and Gary Cumiskey W1GRC "saddled up" and headed to Wareham to find the source of the interference.

The team of NI1X and KB1REQ found the source in a trailer park; W1GRC volunteered to approach the owner. The interference soon disappeared. N1ZZN reported that the owner said that some visiting kids "must have pushed the transmit lock bar down on his desk mike leaving the transmitter on all the time."

Kudos to the South Shore Fox Hunters for resolving this interference issue.

An Emergency Communications Workshop will be held on Saturday, 8 August 2009 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Boston Salvation Army Headquarters at 147 Berkeley Street, Boston. The entrance is from Columbus Avenue opposite the fire station.

This Workshop is for active hams and is produced by the ARES Section Staff through the efforts of Metro Boston ARES, and the cooperation of the Massachusetts Division of The Salvation Army Boston SATERN team.

This Emergency Communications Workshop will provide the background and information to support Amateur Radio operators when needed to respond to a communications emergency or when supplemental communications via Amateur Radio is required. It will feature an Introduction and Conclusion to Emergency Communications, and five one-hour training sessions on topics including:

* Overview of Eastern Massachusetts ARES-RACES-SKYWARN Programs
* Net Operations
* NTS Traffic Message Handling
* Basic Overview of the Incident Command System (ICS)
* Go Kits

This Workshop will also provide a one-hour lunch at no coerced cost to any Amateur Radio operator who attends the session. The presentations will be given by hams well versed in the topics listed above. The training will be a worthwhile experience not just for emergency communicators but for any ham who wants to learn more about our service and hobby.

Preregistration is requested, but is not required in case anyone decides to attend at the last minute. Please try to preregister by Monday, 3 August 2009 to assure the meeting location is set up properly and we have enough refreshments for breaks between lectures and for the lunch break. We will, however, accept any late registrations after that day or any walk-ins provided space permits.

The Eastern MA Section Traffic Manager report for May, 2009 has has been posted to nts.ema.arrl.org for your viewing pleasure.

An Amateur Radio special event station in Massachusetts in conjunction with other special event stations from each of the original thirteen colonies will be QRV for a "Fourth of July Thirteen Original Colonies" celebration on July 1-5, 2009.

A handsome commemorative certificate will be issued to amateurs who contact one or more of the special events stations, including a "clean sweep" endorsement for those working all 13 stations, designated K2A through K2M. Details are available via the Thirteen Colonies web site.

The Police Amateur Radio Team of Westford has agreed to represent the Massachusetts colony for this event using the call sign "K2H." PART member Charlie Learoyd, K1PUB is organizing the activity. He is currently seeking volunteers within PART to participate.

Eastern MA Section Manager Mike Neilsen, W1MPN has released a special statement to all stations participating in the annual ARRL Field Day event June 27-28, 2009.
